May 17, 1954: The Supreme Court Rules on Brown v. Board of Education

On this day in 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public schools violated the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which says that no state may deny equal protection of the laws to any person within its jurisdiction.

Although the decision did not succeed in fully desegregating public education in the United States, it put the Constitution on the side of racial equality and galvanized the nascent civil rights movement into a full revolution.

It’s here!!

Yes, that’s right the Libro Box is up and running and this project is officially launching!! This is an exciting achievement not just for me but it marks the first real step for the project. Now the the real work begins! What do I mean by that? I have a proof of concept device that I can go around and show interested parties the Libro Box. I gave a sneak peek to friends and family and they are excited and intrigued by the concept.

In the next few days I will be posting some tutorial and first hands on with the Libro Box. Once I get done working on that I will have more data I can use to promote the Libro Box. As I said before the first 2 initial goals for the Libro Box are access to valuable information and the distrubution of Chicano literature/art. Based on peoples first reactions and preliminary use of the Libro Box I am confident in accomplishing these goals.

So stay tuned for more updates and thanks again for all the support!

The work investigates the boundaries of the digital and physical. Exploring science, technology, history and humankinds own subjective beliefs. Drawing parallels between the grotesque and forced error, human identity and post human ideals, nature and functional biology. Meshing these ideas together creating new narratives of the future.

Sometime ago I saw a short video from PBS about “Glitch Art” and I was blown away!! So I jumped into the trend to scratch my hacking itch.

Here is my first art-piece entitled Intro-Glitch, I chose this name because this piece was a .wav file of my introduction of my podcast.

My process was simple I simply changed the file extension form .wav to .raw then opened it up in Fotografix then saved it as a .jpg.

The Internet is IRL: Curious case of availability

I recently took a week long trip to Washington state by car. It was a long drive with a lot of areas of nothing in between. The geek in me knew that all rest stops in Texas have free public WiFi available. So I knew if my cell connection failed I could hop on the WiFi and get my daily dosage of Internet. This was great until I left the comfort of my home state and traveled the great Southwest.

Once out of Texas I was at the mercy of free WiFi servicing businesses such as McDonald’s or Denny’s. There’s more places that serve free WiFi but these were the most commonly found WiFi hotspots on my trip. Honestly I was more occupied with enjoying the scenery and trying to not get lost along the trip that WiFi was the least of my worries. Funny enough though it was still a lingering thought at every stop for gas or food.

On the vast open stretch of road were after awhile of staring at desert land my mind kept wandering off to some place on the Internet. “I wonder what new videos are on my Youtube subscription?” It was weird to be wondering about such things when I knew that no matter how long I spent without Internet the videos would still be there whenever I got back on. I always made the assumption that the Internet was a tool that could be utilized whenever it was needed. And that the tool would always be available and I would always know how to use it.

But why was my mind drifting off to places on the Internet? Well like I’ve said before the Internet is IRL there’s no escaping it. For me at least this is not a scary realization but more of an acceptance of what the Internet has become in my life. The Internet is not separate from my everyday experiences it is part of them. The issue really is we try to explain to ourselves and others that the Internet is separate from our lives but it’s not.

Why do we share so much of our lives with the Internet? Because it is a natural process that if the Internet didn’t exist we would be doing it either way. The only difference is that with the Internet the availability to share has been expanded. Whether that availability is there or not does not mean we will not share. I’ve spoken to more people about my trip face to face than making a post about it. So the process of sharing is still an on going process despite the availability of the Internet.

As you can see I’ve changed the theme and layout of the site. I got tired of the old one and it was looking a bit clunky. This theme has more social features and seems to work great with the background I created for Socially Virtual. I made the background in Google Drive-Drawing which didn’t take very long and it was very easy. By the way I am uploading it for anyone to use, remix, and share! Enjoy!
